May 25, 2007Castle Gwynn topped with a New Copper Dome
When you along drive I-840 from now you'll immediately notice a difference: Castle Gwynn now has two copper dome roofs. At 6:15am today, a brand-new 12 ton copper roof was set 100 feet in the air onto Tower # 2 of Castle Gywnn, with the help of an interstate construction crane.
This second roof weighs over 12 tons and is comprised of an all hand-constructed timber frame with copper sheeting. The roof was built entirely in a true 16th Century manner: no nails were used at all, rather the joints were fastened with wooden pegs.
The roof is 34 feet in diameter and 32 feet high, and now sits atop of the five-story tower, which is now an incredible 100 feet high overall, and is clearly visible for miles away when driving along the interstate.
Castle Gwynn was been built and continues to be maintained by Mr. Mike Freeman over a period of over 20 years and is his private home. The initial groundbreaking was in 1980. While there are currently two towers the final plan calls for a four-tower castle area that will include a Great Hall.
Each year since 1986, Mr. Freeman has held the Tennessee Renaissance Festival to celebrate the Renaissance era of England, that inspires him. This festival gives the public a chance - once a year - to tour the castle.
